About Jenny Stadler

Education, Training and Life Experience

I have taken “the long and winding road” to my current career. I graduated from Iowa State University in 1981 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Earth Science and Environmental Studies. I then went to work in Austin, Texas for 3 years in the Texas Department of Water Quality, regulating hazardous waste disposal. I realized that my heart and head were not in it, so when my husband and I moved to Houston I began studying psychology at the University of Houston. I got my Masters degree in clinical psychology in 1988. Between 1988 and 1994 I had three children, completed a thesis and a dissertation, finished my internship at Des Moines Child Guidance in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated with my PhD in clinical psychology with a specialization in child and family. Yes, it was a very productive but also somewhat exhausting period in my life.

sugar land psychologistWithin a week of finishing the PhD, our family moved to Indonesia and we lived on the island of Borneo for 4 years. My fourth child was born in Singapore, just before we moved back to the USA. While we lived overseas I was able to consult with a number of international families regarding parenting, learning disabilities and other childhood disorders.  Consequently, when we moved back I began consulting with and conducting seminars for families moving all over the world on the stresses and adjustments involved in moving to a new culture. My children became very involved in club sports (swimming in particular) and I began to develop an interest in sports psychology, taking additional training in this area. Then in 2004 I began working with the elderly in nursing homes and assisted living centers around Houston. I found a strong connection to the difficulties that come with old age, including questions of mortality, issues of grief and loss, and the feeling of being lost at a time when the world around is changing so rapidly.

Treatment Approach

geriatric psychologyI believe that everyone can learn new skills and that psychotherapy is the process of building on the strengths you have to reduce your struggles in life. I specialize in working with older adults; individuals and families from other cultures; and children who have been stressed out by everyday living. My primary approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy, which focuses on the current thoughts and behaviors that are making your life more difficult. I also use a variety of other approaches, creating a warm, comfortable, relaxed environment for you to explore new ways of approaching old patterns.

Payment For Services

Payment for services is due prior to leaving the office after each individual or group session, in the form of cash or check. If it is more convenient, you may pay for several sessions in advance. Fees that are unpaid, or that appear likely to be unpaid, will be discussed with you individually or in your group. Accounts that are not paid within two sessions will be considered delinquent.
